Can't choose one career? Combine your passions.

If you're like me, you may have several interests. How can you choose one career, one job that will encompass all of them?

The good news is that you don't have to. Having several interests might actually help you narrow down your job search and give you an extra advantage in a job search. It also can mean that you can pursue your interests without having to invest in expensive training.

1. Find a job in your current field in an industry you love. I heard a story of an accountant who wanted to become a landscaper, but she didn't relish the idea of starting over with new training and a beginner's salary. So she got a job with a landscaper as an accountant and couldn't be happier. She's working in the enviroment she wants without sacrificing the experience she already had.

2. Combine your passions. Get creative - take two or three of your passions and see if there's a job that would use both. Here's a story of an art graduate who figured out what do with his degree and his life by combining what he loved.

3. Find a job where you can volunteer for extra projects. I've used this strategy in many jobs. For example, I loved being a technology manager but missed writing, especially writing about people. There really wasn't much room for that kind of writing in my regular duties. So I talked to colleagues and friends in the Corporate Communications department and they agreed to let me take on assignments in my free time. I've also found that these extra projects are helpful in a job search, allowing me to hunt for jobs in a variety of ways.
